Industry leaders Biffa and Stadler have today (15th September) signed the contract for an advanced automation Commercial & Industrial (C&I) treatment facility to be built at Trafford Park, Manchester.
The new £13.5 million state-of-the-art recycling facility, which will be built by Stadler and owned and operated by Biffa, will process approximately 200,000 tonnes of C&I dry mixed recyclate annually and achieve recycling rates of more than 90%.
Senior representatives from Stadler, the turnkey plant supplier, and TITECH UK, providers of the automated sorting systems to separate and recover materials at the plant, joined Dr John Casey of Biffa, to sign the contract on Stadler’s stand at this year’s RWM exhibition.
A number of TITECH’s sorting systems will be installed in the plant, targeting materials such as paper, card, mixed plastics and timber, and helping to derive maximum value from the input materials.
Dr John Casey, Director of Engineering & Quality at Biffa comments: “The plant uses a unique combination of mechanical and optical sorting systems and has been designed to operate with very high levels of automation and efficiency, making it the most advanced plant in the UK. This is the first of a new generation of material recovery facilities that we will be building across the UK.”
Jonathan Clarke, managing director of TITECH UK adds: “We are delighted to be one of chosen partners for this exciting project and TITECH applauds Biffa’s approach to this project which has been to closely consult with key suppliers from the very early stages of concept development. From TITECH’s perspective, this has enabled us to conduct an extensive period of testing to ensure the best results were achieved. As a result, the plant will recover significant volumes of valuable, high-purity end fractions.”
Work has already commenced on the plant, which is scheduled to be fully operational by January 2010. The construction phase will create up to 30 jobs and when fully operational up to 40 people will be employed. Biffa estimates a total investment of more than £3 million will go into the local economy.
Located off Westinghouse Road in Trafford Park, the plant will have easy access to the M60 and M602. The majority of the material received for recycling will come from Biffa’s customers in the Greater Manchester area, providing them with the ability to achieve high recycling rates, avoid landfill and reduce their carbon footprint.
